5 Tips for the Best Panorama Photo Results

• Hold steady and aim to center along the provided line
• Move slowly horizontally to allow for lighting adjustments as image pans
• Tap an area of neutral lighting for the initial exposure, avoid exposure lock in dramatically varied lighting situations
• If you do end up with artifacts and/or regions of black pixels, use Crop directly on iPhone to clean them up instantly
• You can also shoot panorama photos from left to right, or vertically, just by tapping on the camera or rotating the iPhone

Once Panorama is active, moving slowly and holding steady to "paint" your panoramic photo gives the best results. If you move too quickly the camera won't have time to adjust properly to lighting changes, and artifacts can appear on the final image either in the form of black pixels for areas that are missed or out of the guide line, or in the form of chunky transitions. Panoramic pictures are stored in the Photos app Camera Roll as usual, and you can email or send them through messages as you'd expect. If you want the highest quality version of a panoramic image, you'll need to connect the iPhone to a computer and transfer the photos by USB, otherwise it will be automatically compressed and reduced in file size and resolution down to somewhere between 5000×1000 and 8000×2000 to save data usage and make it reasonable to open on iOS devices and in email. The original panoramic photos are gigantic, coming in around a whopping 20,000 x 4000 pixels, so be prepared for iPhone storage space to disappear rapidly if you take a lot of these.

Taking a Panorama Picture with iPhone and Earlier iOS Versions

In prior versions of iOS, accessing Panorama Camera mode is available though it is slightly different. Here's how in iOS 6 for example:

1. Open Camera (from the lock screen is the fastest way)
2. Tap "Options" at the top, then tap "Panorama" from the menu
3. Tap the camera button to start taking a picture, then move slowly while keeping iPhone stable as the panoramic image is drawn
4. Finish by reaching the end of the panoramic guide line or by tapping the camera button again

Finally, though the built in Panorama Camera is limited to new devices like the iPhone X, iPhone 8, 7, Plus models, 6s, 6 Plus, 5S, 5, and 4S, older iPhones are not totally out of luck… if you have an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or you want to take panoramics with an iPod touch or iPad, an excellent third party app called Dermandar is available for $2 on the App Store.

The iPhone takes very natural-looking photos. It doesn't do a lot of color correction, it doesn't saturate colors, and it doesn't increase the contrast by default just to make an image pop. What I'm saying is, the iPhone camera is, by default, a bit basic.

Don't get me wrong: the iPhone camera is good—great even—at capturing what's in front of you. But the resulting photos might seem a little underwhelming when compared to the same shot if taken by a Samsung or Pixel phone; those devices tend to produce photos that are filled with color and contrast by default. When Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 during an event last week, a new feature to iOS 6 was also shown off — panorama photos.

The new feature, which is specific to the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, allows users to take 240-degree panoramic photos using the native iOS Camera app.

Taking a panoramic photo with iOS 6 is simple. Launch the Camera app and tap on the Options button along the top of the screen. Select the panorama button.

You'll then see some instructions on the screen. From there, it's easy. Move your phone in a slow, steady motion from left to right, making sure the arrow stays centered on the line. If you begin to move too fast or get too far off center you'll see a message on the screen telling you how to correct it.

The key here is to go slow. In my testing, even if I was going slow enough to avoid prompting the "Slow Down" warning from my phone, the photo often came out blurry. The slower I moved, the better the end product looked — so take your time.

If you don't want to take a full 240-degree photo, you can stop at any time by pressing the shutter button along the bottom. Whatever progress you have made will then be saved to your Camera Roll.

Get in focus with AE/AF lock

The auto focus on the iPhone is a fickle mistress. If you're having trouble with auto focus jumping around, you can touch the screen until you see AE/AF lock in yellow letters (auto exposure/auto focus lock) and lock it in place.

Know your shutter

The touch-screen shutter button isn't nearly as user-friendly as an actual camera's shutter. For one thing, make sure you account for any glitchy software lag time, and always hold your phone in the same position a few seconds after taking your shot. Also, keep in mind that the photo doesn't register when you press the shutter, and only captures once you release it.

Stay on the grid

Many photographers ascribe to the rule of thirds — putting your subject off-center to provide more visual interest. And while the iPhone's grid function evenly divides your frame in thirds, it's also a useful tool to make sure your image is straighter-looking and properly aligned. Turn it on in Settings > Photos & Camera.

Compose your images diagonally

Capturing a plane that goes off into the distance gives your photos depth, so place the subject of your snap along horizontal lines to give the final product more depth and perspective.

Expose yourself

The built-in exposure meter is a feature you might not know existed if you didn't know where to look for it. Double tap the screen, and slide the yellow sun icon up and down to let in more or less light, which is particularly valuable in those tricky nighttime shots.

Don't zoom

Ever. The final result will only look pixelated, since it's not a real optical zoom. Instead, get closer to your subject or just crop the final image where you won't lose as much resolution.

Get low

We're naturally inclined to take photos from chest level, but lowering your phone to belly-button height can lengthen your subject and provide a more dynamic-looking image. Provided you're not so low you're giving them a double chin.

Enable Burst mode for action shots

It's as easy as holding your shutter button down for a few seconds. The Burst function will take multiple pics in rapid succession, ensuring you don't miss the perfect shot.

Edit photos after the fact

Fake it 'til you make it. Apps like Photoshop Touch, Snapseed, and Darkroom are all great for touching up your pics after the fact, allowing you to correct color imbalances, straighten, etc.

Use the volume buttons as shutter buttons

One of the many downfalls of a screen-based shutter is stability, and it's further tested every time you jostle your phone to get the perfect shot. Use the volume controls on the side to snap your shots instead, and keep a tighter grip.

Test out HDR mode

Admittedly this can sometimes leave you with an image in Willy Wonka hues, but turning on High Dynamic Range will combine three different exposures into one image for situations with less-than-optimal lighting.

Download apps that unlock your iPhone's true potential

Developers have been able to create a wealth of programs that use far more of your camera's features than the standard app. Options like ProShot, VSCO Cam, and Enlight allow you to adjust the flash level, white balance, 50x zoom, and other elements professional photogs pay careful attention to.

Only use flash when absolutely necessary

Despite the surprising firepower of the iPhone 6 and 6s camera, the flash is no good, and you'll only wind up making all your friends look like overexposed, ghostly creatures. Whenever possible, shoot in good light, or use apps to increase the exposure later.

Attach an accessory

For true photography aficionados, there are dozens of external lenses on the market that can significantly improve photo quality, like olloclip or Moment, which essentially transform your phone into a proper DSLR.

Play around with panoramas

No matter how well you're composing a shot, sometimes you simply can't convey the sheer scope of something without an extra-wide shot, and the Pano mode makes it incredibly easy to capture just that. When you move the phone slowly in one direction in Pano mode, the camera automatically stitches together a striking panoramic view of up to 240 degrees.

While some 300 million people actively use Instagram, there's a much smaller portion of users who really, truly know how to take great photos and maximise their engagement rates on the photo sharing app.

We can learn a lot from the slew of professional photographers, bloggers and social influencers who use Instagram to share their holidays, their outfits, and even their lunches. The fact is, you don't need a professional camera to take good pics for Instagram. You just need an iPhone, a good editing app (many of which are free) and a bit of know-how. Here are some top tips we've collated for taking better pics for Instagram, right from your iPhone:

Natural light is always best

And no amount of filtering or editing can hit the right note the way naturally lit photos do.

Don't take your photos in Instagram

Many people with an impressive Instagram feed take (and then edit) their photos on a third-party app before uploading it to Instagram. Some popular apps include Snapseed, VSCO Cam and Photoshop Express, all of which are free and offer more advanced settings that let you adjust shutter speed, white balance and depth perception, which just isn't possible to do on the iPhone camera.

VSCO Cam in particular is useful for colour correction, and Snapseed is good for removing shadows, which is particularly handy when taking photos of inanimate objects such as your lunch.

The clarity editing option on Instagram slightly improves iPhone photos but it's best not to go overboard with it, and research has also shown that saturation effects can actually cause lower engagement rates than the original photo, so less really is more when it comes to editing your photos.

Use leading lines

You can use leading lines in virtually any photo you take on the iPhone, because lines and angles are everywhere. The eye naturally follows lines when presented with an image, so use this to your advantage and position leading lines to draw your viewers' eyes to a certain element in the photo. Note that leading lines aren't always straight – they can be curved, horizontal or vertical. Your leading lines can converge (as tunnels do), or they can be diagonal, like train tracks. Work out what you want to draw your viewers' attention to, and then compose your image based on how you can most effectively draw their eyes to this element.

Experiment with the rule of thirds

The rule of thirds assists you in creating balanced images, which are naturally more aesthetically pleasing. By adhering to the rule of thirds, you will naturally avoid placing your subject right in the centre of the frame or dividing a photo exactly in half with a horizontal line. In square images, try keeping your subject towards the edge of the frame, particularly if it's quite small, such as a person in the distance.

As always, rules are made to be broken, so don't feel like you need to apply the rule of thirds to every photo you take. Sometimes symmetry is more effective, such as when taking photos of buildings. Symmetry is also very powerful in square photos.

Take your photos at different angles

Those pics of people's meals that go viral on social media are often as a result of the photographer standing up on their chair and taking a top-down photo. Don't be afraid to take your photos from different angles to show different textures, shades or shapes. Take the same photo from various angles to see which end-result has the most impact.

Empty space is not the enemy

Don't be afraid of empty space, as it gives your subjects more room to stand out. Negative space works really well in square photos, which is Instagram's default.

Practice, practice, practice

Behind every flawless Instagram photo is another five that didn't quite hit the mark. The best way to get beautiful photos is to practice different techniques and to pick your favourite from each batch.

Last week, Apple held its Apple Events and introduced its new products – iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and Apple Watch 2. One of the striking features of iPhone 7 Plus is its dual-lens camera, one is wide angle and the other is a telephoto lens and both are 12 MP. What's more, the front camera is improved to 7 MP with wide color capture. Those are good news for us. However, having a good camera on your phone doesn't ensure that the photos you take will look better than others', you also need some tips on how to take better photos on iPhone 7/7 Plus. Below is what you need to know.

Methods to Capture Better iPhone Photos

1. Use Grid Feature

Grid utilizes The Rules of Thirds, a visual arts rule, to help people take better photos. The whole scene is divided into nine parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. And it is said that putting the things you want to focus on one of the four intersections, so the picture will look more compact than that taken without this rule. For example, if you want to capture a cat sleeping on the ground, you'd better place the cat around one of the intersections.

You can try this way to take better photos with iPhone 7 & 7 Plus. To enable Grid, just go to "Settings" on your iPhone, find "Photos & Camera" and then turn on "Grid".

2. Choose the Right Focus

Different focus has different effect. Let's see the pictures below first.

The left one, we put focus on the desk, so the toy looks overshadowed. While the right one, we tap focus on the toy and it looks bright. So before you shoot, think about what you are going to capture, tap it on your phone screen and then click the shutter button. Also, you can adjust the brightness when the focus frame shows up.

3. Turn on HDR Auto

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, which could help phone camera display the visual effect of the real environment better than the ordinary. You can see the difference from the following photos.

To turn on it, just open your phone camera, tap "HDR" and hit "On" to capture better iPhone Photos.

4. Shoot with Panorama

To have better photographs, you can also use Panorama. It is not a new function but it is really awesome, as you can put full scenery into a picture. At the bottom of the phone, you will see a few options, and slide it to "PANO". There is a notification saying that "Move iPhone continuously when taking a Panorama", and you can click the arrow above to change the shooting direction.
